The Portage Potato Festival committee is very excited to announce our Headline act for Saturday, August 12th, George Canyon.

Canadian country music legend George Canyon is continually melding his love of family with his passion for music; his integrity and dedication to his family are reflected through the songs he writes and the stories he tells.  A multi-JUNO award winner and PLATINUM selling artist, Canyon’s latest album I Got This finds him back in the saddle; a culmination of two years of writing, and working with incredibly talented writers, producers and musicians. Showing no signs of slowing down, Canyon is hot off the heels of his near 40 date “Jekyll and Nothing To Hide” 2016 cross Canada tour.  “I wanted to create a record that was fun to play, and exciting for the fans to listen to.  It’s been a while since I’ve had an album of new original songs, and these songs put a smile on my face” says Canyon.

I Got This debuted as the #1 Canadian Country album at its time of release (Feb 5th, 2016), and held the top spot for 5 weeks. The first single, and title track went Top 10 in Canada at Country radio. His second single from the album, entitled “Daughters Of The Sun” also charted Top 10 at radio – another Summer smash for Canyon.

I Got This marks Canyon’s eleventh full-length release in a career that spans nearly two decades and includes the GOLD-certified albums “One Good Friend”, “Classics”, “Somebody Wrote Love” and the Richard Marx produced “Better Be Home Soon”. With 400,000 albums sold worldwide, multiple major acting roles on television, and the 2015 launch of his radio show “Down East Country with George Canyon”, the singer-songwriter has cemented his status as a bona fide multi-faceted artist and performer.

A Nova Scotia native, Canyon was recently inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame and has been widely decorated with a number of accolades including multiple CCMA and ECMA Awards in addition to his multiple JUNO Award wins. As the national spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and a vocal advocate and supporter of the Canadian Military, Canyon was also presented with the CCMA “Humanitarian of the Year” Award in recognition of his philanthropic endeavours with both organizations.

SHARP SISTERS

The Sharpe Sisters were born and raised south of Portage and have been surrounded by music their entire lives.  They come from a family of 10 musicians who all learned to sing and play by ear.  The songs they have written will take you for a walk through their memories of growing up on a farm with a loving close knit family.  Country music is their passion and is expressed through three part harmonies with acoustic guitars.

Their first CD “Lookin Back” was released last November and is a collection of their original songs and their favorite country tunes.   Their deepest appreciation goes out to the many people who come out to enjoy their music!

He was also nominated for “Country Album of the Year” at the same awards show. Nelson also released his second album “Ain’t Afraid of the Truth” in October of 2015 which is being played on country radio stations across Canada. HICKTOWN

Hicktown was formed in January 2013 and has gained great popularity due to their talented act.  Singers Brent Earle and Janice Beernaerts are two former Bud Country Talent Search finalists from back in the early nineties.  Janice received 2nd place in Canada and Brent made the top 10 (Brent had only been singing for 2 years prior).  Sylvie Dion, a student prodigy of Mark Morriseau, shows her fiddle talents as well as her singing talents winning a Country Idol singing contest in 2012 in Winnipeg.  The rest of the band backs them up as the group plays top 40 country hits for a dancing crowd. Hicktown has played at Houston’s, The 40, South Beach Casino, Thresherman’s Reunion, Rockfest and many rural venues.   A full sounding six piece country band is what you get with drums, piano, bass, fiddle, guitars vocal harmonies.
